The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the green light to the Iowa-based Wright County Egg to begin shipping shell eggs from two hen houses directly to the consumer markets.
The company had not shipped eggs since August 2010, when some 300 million eggs were associated with an initial multi-state outbreak of Salmonella
Enteritidis.
Health Commissioner Julia Sheen said Wednesday that the FDA noted in a released statement that corrective actions continue to be implemented at the company’s remaining hen houses, operating on six farms. The agency will work with company officials to assure appropriate steps are taken before permitting resumption of shipping to the shell egg market from other houses and farms, Sheen said.
The FDA, which conducted inspections of the company’s farms as recent as last month, said that its decision to give Wright Country Egg the nod to begin shipping shell eggs came following four months of intense investigation and following verification that the company implemented controls to prevent recurrence of the problems that led to the outbreak and a nationwide recall of 308 million eggs in late August. |
