Health Commissioner Julia Sheen said that the US Department of Agriculture is alerting consumers of a recall on a variety of pasta products often consumed by children.
“We ask that parents pay attention to the labels when they shop as the Department’s Enforcement Officers work to get the recalled products off store shelves,” Sheen said Friday night.
According to the USDA, Campbell Soup Co. of Paris, Texas has recalled 15 million pounds of three varieties of
Spaghetti-Os with meatballs after a cooker malfunctioned at one of the company's plants and left the meat undercooked.
The recalled children pasta with the “use by” date between June 2010 and December 2011 are:
- Spaghetti-O's with Meatballs, bearing the product code UV;
- Spaghetti-O's A to Z with Meatballs bearing the product code 4N,
- Spaghetti-O's Fun Shapes with Meatballs (Cars) bearing the product code KS
The product codes can be found stamped on the bottom of the cans, Sheen said.
“We also urge residents to check their homes for these products and to discard them,” Sheen said. “In the past, companies have provided refund to customers who have purchased the recalled product.”
Consumers with questions about the recall of the three lots of
Spaghetti-O's can call the Campbell Hotline at 866-495-3774.
There have been no reports of illnesses associated with the product, according to USDA which also announced a recall of Marie Callender’s brand of “Cheesy Chicken and Rice White Meat Chicken and Broccoli over Rice Topped with Rich Cheddar Sauce.”
The manufacturer, ConAgra Foods of Council Bluffs, Iowa, is recalling all brands for possible salmonella contamination.
Sheen said that the company was alerted of possible food borne illness by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) following an investigation in which 29 people in 14 states fell ill after eating the frozen meal. The specific recalled product comes in a 13-ounce package and bears a label with the establishment number of P-45 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and fever and in some cases can be life-threatening to those with already weakened immune systems.
Sheen is urging residents to discard any of the recalled frozen meals that they may have at home and to call the ConAgra hotline at 888 674-6854 for more information.
