Department of Health Donates Mosquito Nets to the Queen Louise Home for Children
This afternoon Dr. Michelle Davis, Commissioner Nominee and Deputy Commissioner Kimberly Jones visited the Queen Louise Home for Children. They presented the Director with 25 mosquito nets for the orphanage’s residents. The nests can easily cover the baby cribs and the beds of the older residents. They spoke with the Director about the Zika Virus, prevention and testing procedures for suspected cases.

Virgin Islands Department of Health Confirms Zika Virus on St. Croix
The Virgin Islands Department of Health confirmed today, a case positive for Zika virus in a 42 year old woman with no history of previous travel during the incubation period of the virus.

The CDC has released guidelines and recommendations for pregnant women considering travel to an area with Zika virus transmission and recommendations for screening, testing, and management of pregnant returning travelers.

Health Advisory- Puerto Rico Reports First Locally Acquired Case of Zika Virus
Acting Commissioner Juan Figueroa-Serville of The Virgin Islands Department of Health is advising the people of the Territory that the Puerto Rico Department of Health reported the first locally acquired case of Zika virus infection in Puerto Rico. Zika was confirmed in a resident of Puerto Rico with no known travel history.

VIDOH Reinforces Commitment to Fulfill Malpractice Mandates
The Acting Commissioner of Health, Juan Figueroa-Serville, has recently concluded a Hearing to clarify the status of an outstanding Malpractice settlement. By law the Medical Malpractice Risk Management Trust Fund must be sustained in order to provide compensation for settlements. Marc Jerome, Territorial Medical Director, accompanied the Acting Commissioner to testify on behalf of the Department.

Department of Health Leads Impetigo Investigation on St. Croix
Acting Commissioner of Health, Juan Figueroa-Serville, has activated an island-wide public health alert for the island of St. Croix due to an outbreak of Impetigo. Health Officials will be conducting investigations in areas were reports have been high. Adults and children are encouraged to know the signs and seek treatment.
