The Virgin Islands like so many of our Caribbean neighbors are feeling the effect of mosquito borne illnesses such as Chikungunya and dengue fever. All efforts are focused on protecting the community against the spread of these illnesses.

The Department of Health leads Multi-Agency Approach to Combat Disease-Carrying Mosquitoes

The Commissioner of Health, Darice Plaskett, recently concluded a multiagency task force conference call to organize and align the department’s efforts to support and protect the community against the spread of chikungunya and other harmful mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue.

This report is the first of many reports as we work to keep everyone involved informed of our chikungunya situation. As you can see from the report there are still 4 lab confirmed cases, but a shipment was sent to Colorado ADB for laboratory testing yesterday with 15 suspected samples.

DOH Reports the First Locally Acquired Case of Chikungunya

The Virgin Islands Department of Health confirmed two new cases of chikungunya virus. The first case has been confirmed as locally acquired; the second case is an imported case with the patient recent travel history outside of the Territory.

Chikungunya is reportable by law and all confirmed or suspected cases must be reported to the Health Department using the Dengue & Chikungunya Reporting Form.

PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY: DOH Reports first Confirmed Travel Associated Case of Chikungunya

Health Commissioner Darice Plaskett reported on Monday that health officials investigated the first confirmed imported case of Chikungunya, in a return traveler to St. Thomas that was associated with a recent cruise to the Caribbean.

Chikungunya is a viral disease that is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes. Read the facts here

Health Commissioner Darice Plaskett announced today that the department will observe Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week, May 18-24, 2014, with a host of scheduled activities including an, emergency vehicles motorcade, EMS skill competition, Public school visits, Emergency Trailer Expo, and Ambulance Boat Demonstration.

Health Commissioner Darice Plaskett said today that residents should be mindful to protect themselves from mosquitoes, as there are some mosquitoes that transmit viruses that can cause illnesses.
